Does the size of a dog's skull have a relationship to the size of its brain and its intelligence?
Since there's more room in a big dog's skull, you'd perhaps expect it to contain more brain cells and thus be more intelligent, potentially at least. But we all know very bright small dogs and fairly dumb big ones (just like people.) And Border collies are often regarded as the most intelligent dogs, but they are only medium -sized. Do all breeds of dogs have roughly the same number of brain cells, only just spread out more in the bigger ones?
Well ..... my Whippet puppy has a tiny head, when compared to my Basset puppies at the same age. And they, the Bassets, were, apparently, far more intelligent at the same age, so there might be something in it - lol. But as she grows up, it's becoming apparent that actually there's A LOT going on in there - it's just a question of finding the key to unlock it all.......
However, I doubt size matters in this case. Breed, temperament and all that has to come into the intelligence quota, plus I do believe, like with human infants, the more you talk to a baby puppy, from birth, the more responsive they are as adults. Their brains develop more. And this I've proved because all my puppy buyers who have had dogs previously, have remarked on how well their puppies from me have listened to them. And I bought in a puppy Basset who was one of 2 litters that grew up 'together' - one of 18 puppies. She was a law unto herself. She wouldn't listen to me - not for nothing had I, unwittingly, called her Havoc. And I know she just grew up in the nest, no one on one stimulation with her human keeper.
So I think that has more to do with intelligence, than brain size.
